Benue State is gradually gaining recognition as a safer and more inclusive environment for women and girls, a development credited to a blend of gender-sensitive governance and sustained advocacy by faith-based organisations.
This position was highlighted by the Women Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN) during its International Women’s Day celebration held in Makurdi, where the group also extended support to vulnerable widows through the distribution of food items.
Speaking at the event, the State Chairperson of WOWICAN, Lady Member Amishiave, underscored the growing impact of policies introduced by Governor Hyacinth Alia, noting that they are helping to create opportunities for women to live with dignity and actively contribute to societal development.
According to her, the state is witnessing deliberate efforts aimed at fostering an environment where women and girls can thrive without fear or discrimination.
She stressed that amplifying women’s voices and promoting their leadership roles remain essential to building stronger and more resilient communities.
Amishiave, however, cautioned that despite the progress, significant challenges persist.
Lady Amishiave called for sustained and collective action to dismantle structural barriers that continue to limit women’s advancement across workplaces, religious institutions, families, and communities.
Our correspondent reports that the gender-focused event also provided a platform for empowerment and moral support.
Delivering a lecture titled “Give to Gain,” the Assistant Secretary of WOWICAN North Central, Dr. Abigail Gire, encouraged widows to remain resilient in the face of economic hardship and insecurity.
Drawing inspiration from biblical teachings, she described giving as a transformative principle capable of fostering growth and multiplication, even in difficult times.
In his remarks, the Vice Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Benue State, Rev. Jonathan Ngbede, commended WOWICAN for its consistent outreach and advocacy.
He urged the group to sustain its humanitarian efforts, noting their critical role in strengthening social support systems for women and vulnerable groups.
The event not only celebrated the resilience and contributions of women but also reflected a growing synergy between government and faith-based organisations in advancing gender inclusion.
Observers say such collaboration is key to building a society where women and girls are protected, empowered, and given equal opportunities to succeed.
As Benue continues on this path, stakeholders agree that maintaining momentum in gender-responsive policies and grassroots advocacy will be vital in transforming the state into a true safe haven for all women and girls.
