The Wife of the President, Oluremi Tinubu, on Saturday took a significant step toward boosting food production and women’s economic empowerment by flagging off the distribution of agricultural equipment to women farmers across the three senatorial districts of Niger State.
The event, held at the Minna International Airport, witnessed the allocation of critical farming inputs, including 150,000 bags of fertilizer, 250 tractors, and 50 combined harvesters.
The initiative is aimed at encouraging women to embrace full-time farming and contribute meaningfully to national food security.
Speaking during the ceremony, Mrs. Tinubu emphasized that the intervention is designed to promote self-sufficiency among women and strengthen their role in agricultural production.
She expressed confidence that the provision of modern farming tools would attract more women into agriculture, particularly as preparations begin for the 2026 farming season.
According to her, the initiative aligns with broader efforts to combat hunger and starvation through increased food production.
She urged beneficiaries to take full advantage of the opportunity by expanding their farming activities and inspiring others to join the sector.
Also addressing the gathering, the Minister of state for Agriculture, Abdullahi Sabi, described the programme as a key component of the Federal Government’s agricultural transformation agenda.
He noted that the initiative is targeted at boosting large-scale food production for both domestic consumption and export.
Although the criteria for the distribution of the inputs were not disclosed, the minister assured that the Federal Government is working closely with the Niger State Government to leverage the state’s vast arable land.
He added that the partnership aims to position Niger as a leading hub for agricultural mechanization in Nigeria, while also reducing post-harvest losses.
In his remarks, Governor Mohammed Umar Bago expressed optimism that the intervention would accelerate the state’s emergence as a major agricultural powerhouse. He commended the Federal Government for prioritizing women in its agricultural policies.
The President’s wife was accompanied on the one-day working visit by top government officials, including the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, alongside other members of the Federal Executive Council and key figures of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The initiative is widely seen as a strategic move to deepen women’s participation in agriculture while advancing national goals of food sufficiency and economic development.
