The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced plans to revoke the licences of drivers and fleet operators involved in fatal road crashes and prosecute them as part of efforts to improve road safety.
The FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, issued the warning on Thursday in Abuja during the annual Safety Manager Retreat themed “Driver Management: Enhancing Safety Through Technology.”
Our correspondent reports that the retreat aims to educate Safety Managers on updates in the Road Transport Safety Standardization Scheme (RTSSS) to promote best practices in fleet operations.
Mohammed emphasized the importance of driver management in ensuring road safety, noting that it is one of the key pillars of the RTSSS.
He urged fleet operators to take driver management seriously to reduce road crashes.
“We are here to review performance and push for improvements in fleet management practices.
“Many operators have made commendable progress in meeting the minimum safety standards, which has likely contributed to reduced road crashes and increased business patronage. However, safety is a shared responsibility,”Mohammed said.
He outlined stricter measures, including:Prosecution of non-compliant fleet operators.
Suspension of operators failing certification standards twice.
Issuance of certification stickers only to vehicles with functional Speed Limiting Devices (SLD).
Legal action against any driver or fleet operator involved in a fatal crash.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, represented by AIGP Benneth Igwe, pledged continued police support to the FRSC in managing traffic and addressing violations.
Mrs. Olubunmi Otti, representing the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), urged fleet operators to uphold passengers’ rights and ensure value for money.
Over 2,000 safety managers attended the retreat, underscoring its significance in advancing fleet management best practices in Nigeria’s evolving road transport sector.
