The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has denied allegations circulating on social media that the Inspector General of Police is interfering in the upcoming Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT 2024 elections.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the FCT Police Spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, described the claims as false, emphasizing the need to clarify the situation and dispel misinformation.
“On November 25, 2024, a formal petition was submitted to the FCT Commissioner of Police by Mr. Emeka Nze, Mr. Victorson Agbenson, and Mr. Johnchuks Onuanyim. The petition accused Miss Grace Ike, Miss Edeh Sandra Ogechukwu, Mr. Yahaya Ndambabo, and Mr. Jide Oyekunle Adeyemi of forging Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) certificates allegedly issued by the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ), Abuja,” Adeh stated.
She explained that the investigation is focused solely on allegations of forgery and is not connected to the NUJ election.
“The Command’s involvement is limited to examining the forgery allegations based on the petition received. It has no bearing on the NUJ elections,” Adeh clarified.
As part of the investigation, the individuals named in the petition were invited for questioning to verify the authenticity of the certificates in question.
“Our duty is to uphold the rule of law and ensure justice is served based on the facts and evidence,” Adeh said, stressing that the Nigerian Police have no interest in influencing the NUJ election.
She called on all parties to respect the integrity of the ongoing investigation and refrain from spreading unsubstantiated claims that could undermine public confidence.
“In due time, the outcome of the investigation will be made public to ensure transparency,” she assured.
