Former NUJ chairman emerges clerk, Kogi Assembly

A one-time Chairmen, Kogi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Alhaji Ibrahim Isah Amoka, has emerged the Clerk, Kogi State House of Assembly.

Duaglobalnews reports that the emergence of Amoka to such a high profile legislative office was sequel to the confirmation of his appointment to substantive position by the Assembly during Tuesday’s plenary.

The online outfit recalls that Amoka had been on such appointment in acting for six months.

The House gave the approval to his appointment, following the adoption of the motion for his confirmation as the Clerk, raised by the Acting House Leader, Bajeh Muktar (APC-Okehi).

The online publication further reports that the motion was seconded by the Acting Chief Whip, Edoko Ododo Moses (APC-Dekina-Biraidu), who noted that Amoka had proved his mettle in the acting capacity and as such, should be confirmed.

Other legislators who supported the motion for the confirmation of appointment of Amoka include Alfa Momoh Rabiu (APC-Ankpa II); Alhaji Isah Umar (APC-Lokoja I) and Prince Hilarion Collins Musa (APC-Omala).

The Speaker of the House, Prince Matthew Kolawole, following overwhelming voice votes, adopted the motion.

Duaglobalnews reports that Amoka, a 1984 graduate of Political Science from University of Ibadan and a veteran journalist was until his appointment in December 2019, Director of Information Services in the Assembly.

Before then, he had worked in the state-owned newspaper, The Graphic, as Head of Political Desk.

The new clerk hails from Obehira in Okengwen district of Okene Local Government Area of the state.

It was a joyous galore for journalists as Amoka breezed into their secretariat, behind Crowther Memorial College, Lokoja to break the cheering news to them.

Many of them were seen exchanging handshaking and other exciting expressions with the new clerk,whose appointment has been described as the first of its kind since the creation of Kogi state on August 27,1991.

Some journalists,who spoke with Duaglobalnews expressed delight over the confirmation of one of their own to such an important office in the legislative arm of the government.

“It is a sign that the state government reposes confidence in the ability of journalists in the state to hold higher position, outside their chosen profession, in the collective effort to move the state forward,” Alhaji D U Ahmed, an online publisher and media consultant said.
