In a decisive move aimed at reinvigorating his administration’s economic agenda, Bola Tinubu has approved a cabinet reshuffle that sees key changes in the nation’s finance and housing ministries.
The development, announced in an official memo by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, confirmed that Wale Edun and Umar Dangiwa have been relieved of their duties as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, and Minister of Housing and Urban Development, respectively.
According to the directive, Edun is to hand over immediately to Taiwo Oyedele, who now steps into the role as the new Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy.
Oyedele previously served as Minister of State for Finance and is expected to bring renewed direction to the nation’s fiscal management.
In a similar vein, the President has named Muttaqha Rabe Darma as ministerial nominee and minister-designate for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, while Dangiwa has been directed to transfer responsibilities to the Minister of State in the interim.
The memo stressed urgency in the transition process, directing that all handover formalities be concluded on or before the close of business on April 23, 2026.
Providing insight into the rationale behind the reshuffle, Akume explained that the changes are part of deliberate efforts to strengthen cohesion within the cabinet, enhance synergy in governance, and deliver more tangible economic results for Nigerians under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He further noted that the President acted within the constitutional framework, invoking powers vested in his office under Sections 147 and 148 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
While expressing appreciation to the outgoing ministers for their service, the President wished them well in their future pursuits.
He also reassured members of the Federal Executive Council that the process of repositioning the cabinet for optimal performance would remain ongoing.
Some political observers who spoke with our correspondent on the development in Lokoja on Tuesday described the latest shake-up as underscoring the administration’s resolve to recalibrate its strategy in response to mounting economic expectations, with a renewed focus on efficiency, accountability, and impactful governance.
