A dark cloud of grief has descended on Covenant University,Ota, following the shocking and heartbreaking death of a 500-level student, Toluwase Jesutunmise, who collapsed during a routine football training session on campus.
The tragic incident, confirmed by the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Timothy Anake, occurred on Monday, leaving students, staff, and the wider community in utter disbelief.
Jesutunmise, described as a vibrant and dedicated student full of promise, had been actively participating in a training session when he complained of leg pain and fatigue.
In what appeared to be a harmless decision, he stepped out of the game to rest,unaware that those would be his final moments.
According to the university, the situation quickly turned alarming when his teammates noticed he was gasping for breath.
Panic set in as he was rushed across the field to the university’s medical centre in a desperate race against time.
Despite swift intervention, hope faded rapidly.
Medical personnel immediately initiated emergency procedures, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with the aid of an automated external defibrillator (AED).
But all efforts to bring the young student back to life proved futile as was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Preliminary findings point to a previously undisclosed heart condition as the likely cause of death,a silent threat that cut short a life brimming with potential.
The university management stressed that there was no negligence on the part of its medical team, noting that all necessary equipment was available and promptly deployed in response to the emergency.
Sources disclosed that in a moment that underscored the depth of the tragedy, the Vice-Chancellor and members of the management remained at the medical centre until the arrival of Jesutunmise’s devastated parents, offering support as the painful reality unfolded.
The institution described the loss as not just a personal tragedy for the bereaved family, but a profound blow to the university community and society at large,now deprived of a young man whose future once shone brightly.
As grief lingers across the campus, the university has called on the public to keep the family in prayers, while students struggle to come to terms with the haunting reality that a routine day on the field ended in irreversible loss.
