What began as a routine rescue mission along the busy Benin–Ore Highway ended in heartbreaking tragedy as a traffic marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and a driver lost their lives in a secondary crash at Oviogie community in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State.
Our correspondent gathered that the fatal incident occurred on February 19, 2026, when FRSC marshals and other emergency responders had mobilised to rescue victims of an earlier road accident on the expressway.
Confirming the development on Friday in Benin City, the Edo State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Cyril Mathew, said the rescue team was actively attending to victims when another vehicle reportedly ploughed into the crash scene.
According to him, the second vehicle rammed into those at the scene, killing an FRSC marshal who was part of the emergency response team and a driver during the rescue operation.
“The impact of the second crash led to the death of an FRSC marshal involved in the rescue effort and a driver who was present at the scene,” Mathew said.
Our correspondent further gathered that the situation, however, took a more disturbing turn as tensions reportedly flared shortly after the incident.
Mathew disclosed that some motorists allegedly accused FRSC personnel of causing the crash and subsequently attacked them, further escalating chaos at the already tragic scene.
The heartbreaking development has once again underscored the dangers faced daily by emergency responders who risk their lives to save others on Nigeria’s highways.
