Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has commiserated with the families of victims of Tuesday’s tragic accident along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, which claimed six lives.
The governor conveyed his condolences on Wednesday during a visit to the crash scene at the Toll-Gate area in Ota.
The governor who was represented by his deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele.
Abiodun expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a painful loss to the state and the affected families.
“The Ogun State Government extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prays that God grants them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” he said.
He assured that the state government would provide necessary support to the injured victims currently receiving treatment in hospital to ensure their speedy recovery.
The governor acknowledged the magnitude of the tragedy and pledged that additional safety measures would be implemented to prevent a recurrence.
He commended the swift response of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, and other stakeholders who participated in rescue efforts.
Abiodun reiterated his administration’s commitment to adopting global best practices in road safety to safeguard lives and property, particularly along major highways.
He, however, cautioned residents against street trading, noting that such activities expose traders and motorists to avoidable dangers.
The governor also stressed the need to engage drivers’ unions in sustained safety education campaigns and urged vehicle owners to ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles before putting them on the road.
In his remarks, the Olota of Ota, Oba Adeyemi Obalanlege, applauded the governor for personally identifying with the community in its moment of grief.
The traditional ruler observed that the crash could have been avoided if traffic regulations had been strictly observed.
He warned against roadside trading, describing it as a practice that endangers both sellers and buyers.
“We cannot continue to blame the government when our actions contribute to these unfortunate incidents,” he said, urging traders to relocate to designated markets to prevent further loss of lives.
Our correspondent reports that an articulated vehicle,Mack petrol tanker, travelling from Ilo-Awera towards the Toll-Gate area on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway reportedly suffered brake failure on Tuesday, leading to the fatal crash that left six persons dead and three others critically injured.
