Tragedy has struck Kano state as no fewer than 21 people were killed in a fatal road accident along the Kaduna-Kano Expressway, at Kasuwar Dogo in the Dakatsalle area of Kano State.
Our correspondent reports that the incident , which occurred early Sunday morning, involved a commercial Toyota Hummer bus and a DAF trailer, following a failed overtaking attempt by the bus driver.
Eyewitnesses said the driver of the bus veered into the oncoming lane while attempting to overtake another vehicle, resulting in a head-on collision with the trailer.
“The impact was so severe that it sparked a fire which quickly engulfed both vehicles,” TheNewsZenith. “All 21 occupants of the bus were burnt beyond recognition,”one witness said.
Emergency responders, including officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and fire services, arrived at the scene to recover remains and begin an investigation.
The Sector Command of the FRSC in Kano State confirmed the accident in a statement signed by the Sector Public Education Officer, CRC Abdullahi Labaran, saying that the crash occurred at approximately 8:23 a.m.
According to him, the Toyota Hummer bus (registration number KMC 171 YM) collided with a DAF trailer (registration number GWL 422 ZE) after the bus driver reportedly drove against traffic.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the bus driver violated traffic regulations, driving against the flow of traffic and colliding head-on with the trailer.
“The resulting impact triggered a fire that consumed both vehicles, leaving most victims burnt beyond recognition,”the statement read.
The FRSC noted that 24 people were involved in the crash, adding that of the figure, 21 died, while three sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Labaran added that the FRSC rescue team promptly contacted the Federal and State Fire Services, which dispatched personnel to extinguish the blaze and assist in recovery operations.
The charred remains of the deceased have been evacuated to the Nassarawa Hospital Mortuary in Kano, while the injured are receiving treatment at Garun Malam General Hospital.
Following the accident, FRSC operatives, in collaboration with the police and a towing unit, swiftly cleared the wreckage to restore normal traffic flow along the highway.
The tragic incident has once again raised alarms over reckless driving and poor adherence to road safety regulations on Nigeria’s highways. TNZ.
