The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme Sector (NUPCPS) has honoured the immediate past Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr.Wale Edun, with a “Result Driven Executive Award” in recognition of his contributions to the welfare of retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

Our correspondent reports that the award was presented during a courtesy visit by the union’s leadership to the former minister at his Wuse 2 office in Abuja on Thursday.

According to the union, the award had earlier been approved during its National Thanksgiving Conference held at the Women Development Centre, Abuja, on March 24, 2026, but could not be presented at the event due to the minister’s unavoidable absence.

Presenting the award, the National Chairman of NUPCPS, Comrade Sylva C. Nwaiwu, described the honour as a symbol of appreciation from pensioners across the country for the former minister’s role in facilitating the recent release of ₦758 billion to settle government pension liabilities under the CPS.

Nwaiwu said the gesture went beyond mere recognition, noting that it reflects the prayers, goodwill and gratitude of thousands of CPS retirees who benefited from the intervention.

“What is being presented to you today is not just an award, but a collection of prayers and goodwill messages from the leaders and members of NUPCPS across Nigeria,” he said.

Comrade Nwaiwu commended Edun for what he described as his positive commitment to improving the welfare and wellbeing of Nigerian retirees and senior citizens, adding that the release of the funds had brought relief and renewed hope to many pensioners.

The union leader, however, stressed the need for sustained government attention to pension matters, describing retirees as citizens who had devoted the greater part of their lives to national service.

Receiving the award, Edun expressed gratitude to Almighty God and to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve the country and contribute to policies aimed at improving the lives of pensioners.

The former minister said he was deeply honoured by the recognition from the pensioners’ union and reaffirmed his commitment to initiatives that promote the welfare of senior citizens.

He noted that retirees deserve dignity, security and prompt access to their entitlements after years of dedicated service to the nation.

Other delegates of the union who accompanied the national chairman to the visit applauded the former minister for his support towards addressing pension-related challenges in the country.

Other highlights at the event were goodwill messages, photographs and renewed calls for stronger collaboration between government institutions and pensioners’ groups to ensure a more sustainable pension administration system in Nigeria.
