Ahead of the upcoming local government council elections in Kogi State, scheduled for Saturday, October 19, 2024, the Kogi NGOs Network (KONGONET), appealed to all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and transparent electoral process.
The Reporters reports that KONGONET is a leading civil society coalition in kogi as well as an accredited observer for the election.
In a statement made available to The Reporters in Lokoja on Friday, KONGONET’s Chairperson, Amb. Idris Ozovehe Muraina, emphasized the critical need for diligence, integrity, and a peaceful atmosphere during the elections.
Commending the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) for its efforts in election preparations, KONGONET urged the commission to stay resolute in its commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections.
The NGO noted that KOSIEC’s role in ensuring transparency would be pivotal to the success of the democratic process.
KONGONET also called on security agencies to maintain a neutral stance, emphasizing the importance of a safe and secure environment for voters, election officials, and observers.
The NGO emphasizes that impartiality and vigilance from the security forces would help prevent voter intimidation and violence, thereby ensuring citizens can exercise their right to vote without fear.
It acknowledged the crucial role of the media in providing accurate and fair coverage of the election cycle. Amb.
Muraina urged journalists and media organizations to uphold their duty as democracy’s watchdogs by exposing any irregularities that might arise during the election process.
The NGO further appealed to accredited observers to perform their duties with diligence and impartiality. Their unbiased oversight, according to KONGONET, would be vital in upholding the integrity of the electoral process.
Expressing gratitude to the Kogi State government for its support of KOSIEC and other stakeholders, KONGONET encouraged continued collaboration to ensure the elections conclude successfully.
The NGO also called on authorities to address past grievances related to the non-payment of adhoc staff, urging that all election workers be compensated fairly and in a timely manner.
KONGONET urged the people of Kogi State to participate actively in the elections and vote for leaders who will represent their interests.
The NGO stressed the importance of maintaining peace across all 21 local government areas and 239 wards, reiterating that the success of the elections depends on the collective commitment to democratic values.
Amb. Muraina expressed optimism for a successful election that reflects the will of the people, calling on all stakeholders to work together for a brighter and more democratic future for Kogi State.
