Mr Godwin Ezeemo, a frontline politician and PDP Governorship aspirant in Nov. 6 election in Anambra state has commended INEC for releasing date 2023 general elections.
The aspirant, who expressed his view while speaking with the press in Awka on Thursday said the date was long enough to enable the political parties to plan well for the all important exercise.
According to him, it would afford all electoral process to commence on time and avoid hasty preparations by all concerned bodies.
He, however,urged the electoral body to improve upon the success recorded in the previous elections and rectify grey areas of electoral challenges in Nigeria.
However,Chief Chris Elumunoh, a former President of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo in Anambra state said it was too early for INEC to release the date, adding that there were more important issues for the electoral umpire to look into to ensure the success of the planned polls.
” Is INEC sure that people will come out to vote under the heat of insecurity challenges faced by Nigerians.
” How safe is the country now?, how can people go for election now?, with so many security challenges.
“It is too early to talk of elections.
” The first and foremost thing is to talk of restructuring, for us to talk of elections.
” Militants every where, we need to address pressing issues election 2023 is not the core issue for Nigerians now,” he said
Mr Christain Beluchukwu, a political stakeholder in the state lauded the efforts of the electoral body and advised that issues that led to insecurity be resolved on time.
Mrs Grace Anagor, a community and political leader in the state, said that INEC tried by releasinng the date but urged the body to make open penalty attached to any political party that will violate electoral laws.
Our Correspondent recalls that the Chairman of INEC announced February 18 as the commencement of 2023 general elections in the country, adding that it would begin with Presidential and National Assembly.
He made the disclosure in Abuja at a one-day public hearing on the National Electoral Offences Commission Establishment Bill 2021, organized by the Senate Committee on INEC.
