A Community leader and notable politician in Delta state,Chief Abovi Erute, has advised the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Sen.Iyorcha Ayu, to resign his position for the sake of the Presidential bid of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
He gave the advice from Warri on Friday in a telephone interview with the Correspondent of The Reporters.
Erute, who is the President General, Uvwie General Improvement Union in the state, said the advice became necessary because Ayu agreed to step down during the convention of party,if Atiku, a northerner, emerged as the candidate of the party in next year presidential election.
The President General of the union argued that Ayu, as the National Chairman of PDP and Atiku contesting on the platform of the party might jeopardise the electoral victory of Atiku, because the two personalities are from the north.
Chief Erute stressed the need for politicians to hold the concept of north-south dicotomy in the political process of the country in high esteem.
“He said:”In Nigeria, what we should care about is that, north-south dicotomy is not something to be thrown aside. It should be made sacrosanct because that is what will solve our problem.
“Since we all know that have unity in diversity, what we can do is to reduce it to minimum level by recognising each of the zones in the scheme of polical process.”
He attributed the present crisis in PDP to the fact that the party jettisoned zoning system, adding that with Iyorcha Ayu as the National Chairman and Atiku, the presidential candidate of the party, also a northerner, the
south has been sidelined in the leadership of the party.
According to Chief Erute, since the Deputy National Chairman of the PDP is also from the north, the party can work out a process where by a southerner is elected to take over from Ayu, to put the party in a comfortable position to enable its presidential candidate win the election.
On Mr Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, the president general expressed delight that the chances of Obi continued to grow on a daily basis toward the possibility of realising his political ambition of becoming the next president of Nigeria in 2023.
He argued that whereas the crisis in PDP had nothing to do with Obi, the LP presidential candidate remained the only candidate that had been able to convince Nigerians of the possibility of moving away from the nation’s socio-economic and security problems to meaningful solutions.
“The man said we should move away from being a consumption to production nation and that is what Nigeria needs to develop,” he stressed.
