The President of the 36 Political Elevation Group (36 PEG), Prince Dan Olaitan Dada, has applauded the recent reconciliation between Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, and former Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate, Alhaji Murtala Yakubu Ajaka, describing the development as a shining example of political maturity and national unity.
Prince Dan in a statement he signed and made available to The Reporters in Lokoja on Thursday,said the reconciliatory steps taken by the two political figures marked a significant departure from the politics of bitterness and hostility often associated with post-election periods in Nigeria.
The 36 PEG President said the reconciliation reflects the kind of leadership and statesmanship capable of strengthening democracy and promoting peaceful coexistence among political actors and their supporters.
According to him, two major reconciliatory meetings held in Kogi within 72 hours signalled a positive shift in the political culture of the state.
He recalled that before Ajaka’s meeting with Governor Ododo at the Government House in Lokoja, the former SDP governorship candidate had earlier met with Igala elders and stakeholders in Kogi East to discuss the future of the area and the need to move beyond the divisions created by the 2023 governorship election.
Prince Dan noted that both leaders demonstrated courage and maturity by placing the peace and development of Kogi State above political differences.
He explained that the 36 Political Elevation Group is a non-partisan civic platform operating across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory with a mandate to promote healthy political engagement, dialogue and people-oriented governance.
According to him, the organisation works with youths, traditional rulers, civil society organisations and public office holders to encourage issue-based politics and strengthen democratic values across the country.
The 36 PEG President stressed that the reconciliation in Kogi aligns with the core objectives of the organisation, especially in the areas of political culture reform, conflict resolution, civic accountability and national cohesion.
He added that the group believes strongly in fostering conversations among political opponents in order to prevent post-election tensions and promote unity.
Prince Dan further urged politicians across Nigeria to embrace dialogue, tolerance and forgiveness in the interest of national development.
“The work of building Nigeria cannot be done in silos of anger and division,” he said, adding that the Kogi example should serve as a lesson to political actors ahead of future elections.
He disclosed that 36 PEG, through its coordinators and partners across the country, would continue to promote and replicate the Kogi reconciliation model in other states.
According to him, Nigeria’s democratic growth depends largely on the willingness of leaders to place collective progress above personal or partisan interests.
Prince Dan expressed optimism that the reconciliation between Governor Ododo and Ajaka would help deepen peace and political stability in Kogi State while inspiring similar efforts in other parts of the country.
He maintained that the 2027 political cycle should not repeat the bitterness and divisions that characterised previous elections, insisting that dialogue and unity remain the pathway to sustainable national development.
