A human rights organization, Guard Time Information,GTI, comprising of Human Rights Activists in Nigeria ,has called for stronger collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and civil society groups to promote peace, professionalism, and respect for human rights across the country.
The call is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday and signed by the Chairman of the organization, Comrade Bibi Oduku.
The group expressed strong support for the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, describing his administration as reform-driven and committed to professionalism, justice, fairness, and effective policing.
Oduku said the organization had confidence in the ability of the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police, who assumed office on February 24, 2026, to reposition the Nigeria Police Force for greater efficiency and public trust.
He described the Police as a critical institution saddled with the responsibility of protecting lives and property, urging Nigerians to support security agencies in the collective pursuit of peace, justice, and national development.
The organization commended the Inspector-General of Police, Assistant Inspectors-General, Commissioners of Police, Divisional Police Officers, and other officers and men of the Force for their sacrifices and commitment in the fight against crime across the country.
Oduku stressed the need for closer cooperation between human rights organizations and the offices of the IGP, Assistant Inspectors-General, and Commissioners of Police nationwide, noting that such synergy would strengthen peace-building initiatives, non-violence campaigns, and professionalism within the Force.
According to him, regular training of officers on anger management, lawful engagement, and respect for human rights would help improve public confidence in law enforcement agencies and reduce avoidable conflicts between police personnel and citizens.
“As human rights activists and patriotic Nigerians, we believe in dialogue, diplomacy, and lawful conflict resolution mechanisms that will foster mutual understanding between citizens and law enforcement agencies without resulting in violence or bloodshed,” Oduku stated.
He disclosed that the organization was expanding its collaboration with the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), following discussions with,PCRC’s
National Chairman, Alhaji Magaji Ibrahim Olaniyan.
The partnership, he explained, is aimed at strengthening cooperation among human rights activists, journalists, security agencies, and members of the public to promote peace, mutual understanding, and responsible civic engagement.
Oduku added that the organization’s state coordinators would soon begin engagement with Commissioners of Police in their respective states to organize peace-building and non-violence orientation programmes across police divisions and formations nationwide.
He added that legal practitioners and journalists would also participate actively in the planned programmes to promote accountability, and responsible journalism among others.
The rights activist appealed to media organizations and journalists to ensure balanced, factual, and responsible reportage of security-related issues in order to avoid escalating tensions or creating unnecessary panic among the public.
Also speaking, the National Patron of the organization from Edo State, Ikhuenbor Felix Igbinevbo, popularly known as Mr. FIGO, also commended what he described as the improved operational effectiveness of the Police under the leadership of IGP Disu.
He expressed optimism that intelligence-driven policing and peaceful engagement between officers and citizens would significantly enhance public safety and national development.
Igbinevbo urged Nigerians to remain law-abiding and refrain from taking the laws into their own hands, assuring that any police officer found guilty of misconduct should be made to face appropriate disciplinary and legal actions.
GTI also praised Ikioye Orutugu and the Nigeria Police Force Anambra State Command for recent operations against criminal hideouts and the recovery of arms aimed at improving security in the state.
