Tinubu Rallies APC to Deepen Unity, Defends Reforms at Crucial National Convention

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday delivered a strong message of unity, reform, and political discipline as he addressed delegates at the 4th Elective National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja, urging party members to consolidate gains and safeguard Nigeria’s democratic future.

Speaking at the Eagles Square, Abuja, Tinubu described the convention as a “defining chapter” in both the party’s evolution and Nigeria’s democratic journey, stressing that unity remains the bedrock of the APC’s strength since its formation in 2013.

Under the theme “Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the President called on party faithful to recommit to the founding ideals of discipline, justice, and national development, warning that internal divisions driven by personal ambition could weaken the party.

“Our greatest strength has never been in our numbers, but in our unity,” Tinubu said, cautioning that political parties often collapse when “ego overrides ideology.”

He reaffirmed that the APC was not created merely as a platform for political ambition but as a vehicle for national transformation, pledging continued efforts to build a Nigeria where governance delivers tangible results and citizens enjoy dignity and opportunity.

In a significant political note, Tinubu dismissed concerns that the ruling party seeks to dominate the political space, insisting that he supports a vibrant opposition as essential to democracy.

“We do not seek a one-party state,” he declared. “Democracy thrives on healthy competition.”

The President also defended the controversial Electoral Act 2026, stating that it followed due legislative processes and reflects Nigeria’s collective effort to strengthen its electoral system.

He described persistent opposition criticisms as “a disservice” to Nigerians.

Highlighting his administration’s performance, Tinubu said the government has made notable progress despite global economic pressures, including the impact of the US–Israeli–Iranian War.

According to him, reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda have begun yielding results, citing improvements in infrastructure, foreign exchange stability, trade surpluses, and declining inflation.

“Our stock market is booming, GDP is growing, and investor confidence has returned,” he said, adding that Nigeria’s exit from the FATF Grey List marks a return to global financial credibility.

He acknowledged persistent challenges in the power sector, including debts and outdated infrastructure, but unveiled plans to address them through the establishment of a Grid Asset Management Company to boost electricity supply.

Turning to party affairs, Tinubu urged delegates to conduct themselves with maturity and integrity during the convention, emphasizing that no contest should divide the party.

“At the end of this convention, our party must be the victor,” he said.

The President also made strong appeals for greater inclusion of youths and women in leadership, describing them as critical to Nigeria’s future.

He pledged that the APC would expand opportunities for both groups to participate meaningfully in governance and party structures.

Tinubu paid tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari and other departed party leaders, urging members to preserve and deepen the vision they helped build.

He further commended party leaders, governors, and members of the convention planning committee for ensuring a successful event, while charging newly elected officials to lead with integrity, humility, and vision.

As the APC continues to attract defectors from other parties, Tinubu said the party’s growing membership reflects Nigerians’ trust, urging leaders to sustain the momentum through transparent and credible leadership.

“The sacrifices of today are laying the foundation for Nigeria’s prosperity tomorrow,” he said, expressing confidence that the country is moving steadily from economic hardship to stability and growth.

The convention marks a critical moment for the APC as it seeks to consolidate power, strengthen internal democracy, and position itself for future electoral contests.
