The National Park Service (NPS) is in deep mourning following the passing of its first Conservator-General (C-G), Alhaji Lawan Marguba, on Saturday morning.
Reacting to the sad development,Dr. Ibrahim Goni, the current C-G of NPS, expressed profound sorrow over the loss.
The Reporters gathered that the deceased passed away at the National Hospital, Abuja, during a brief illness and was buried at Gudu Cemetery in Apo, Abuja, at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The solemn occasion was witnessed by the bereaved family, colleagues, and well-wishers who paid tribute to a life dedicated to the conservation of Nigeria’s natural heritage.
Throughout his tenure, Marguba pioneered and coordinated numerous afforestation and conservation programmes across the country, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
Dr. Goni, represented at the burial by Inwond Fingesi, Assistant Conservator-General and Head of Finance and Accounts Department, described, Marguba as a trailblazer and pace setter in the service.
“He served from 1992 to 2005. His advice was always filled with wisdom and encouragement, which remains invaluable to this day,” Goni said.
Marguba’s daughter, Mrs. Ummi Bukar, described the deceased as a father who had always been a pillar of strength and protection to the family.
“He was a wonderful and protective person who guided me through many hurdles of life. I’m going to miss him dearly,” she said with tears.
She added that her father’s passion for conserving nature defined his life.
“My father faced health challenges, including a devastating stroke in 2017 that left him paralyzed for nine years. Yet, his spirit remained strong until he passed away on Saturday morning,” Bukar recalled.
Colleagues and family alike remember Marguba as a dedicated conservationist whose work and life continue to inspire the National Park Service and all who knew him.
