President Ahmed Bola Tinubu has appointed Assistant Inspector General of Police as acting Inspector-General of police.
In a statement on Tuesday in Abuja,Bayo Onanuga, special adviser on information and strategy, said Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun as the IGP.
Until his elevation, Disu headed the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Ikoyi, Lagos, where he supervised high-profile investigations and coordinated major criminal intelligence operations.
A native of Lagos State, the new police chief brings over three decades of experience in law enforcement, spanning operations, intelligence, investigations, and strategic command.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University, as well as Master’s degrees in Public Administration, Criminology, and Security and Legal Psychology.
He also earned an Advanced Diploma in Forensic Investigation, underscoring his strong academic and professional grounding in modern policing.
Since joining the Nigeria Police Force in 1992, Disu has served in several key capacities across the country.
His career highlights include stints as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos, Head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory, and Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit (SPU).
His tenure as RRS Commander between 2015 and 2021 attracted national recognition, particularly for notable improvements in urban crime control, rapid response coordination, and tactical policing in Lagos.
With his appointment, expectations are high as Nigerians look to the new Inspector-General to deepen professionalism within the Force, enhance security operations nationwide, and rebuild public trust in policing institutions.
Our correspondent recalls that Tinubu appointed Egebtokun as the 22nd IGP on June 19, 2023 and the Nigeria Police Council
confirmed his appointment into
substantive position on October 31, 2023.
