Gunmen suspected to be bandits have killed two members of the Volunteer Guards of Nigeria (VGN) in Lokoja, Kogi State,after an ambush they mounted for their victims.
Our correspondent gathered that the slain officers: Abbas Idris and Ibrahim Bello Hussain, were attacked and killed while on duty on Friday, February 6, 2026.
The Chairman of Lokoja Local Government Area, Comrade Abdullahi Adamu, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, described the killings as a devastating blow to the community.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the fallen officers, noting that their loss would be deeply felt.
“These brave officers were part of a dedicated Joint Task Force stationed in Atsawa community, near Jamata.
“Their vigilance and sacrifices have significantly improved security in the area,” Adamu said.
The council chairman commended the courage of security personnel who continue to risk their lives daily to protect citizens despite growing threats.
“We stand in solidarity with the bereaved families during this painful period.
“The sacrifice of Abbas Idris and Ibrahim Bello Hussain will not be in vain,” he added.
The council boss urged residents to remain vigilant and support ongoing security efforts to curb criminal activities.
“We appeal to residents to report suspicious activities to authorities and work together with security agencies to ensure the safety of our neighborhoods,” the statement read.
Adamu also called on government agencies and community leaders to strengthen collaboration in the fight against insecurity, stressing that collective action was crucial.
He assured that the local government would provide necessary assistance to the families of the deceased officers to help them cope with the tragic loss.
The council chairman further announced plans to hold a memorial service in honour of the slain guards as a mark of recognition for their bravery and commitment to duty.
“Abbas and Ibrahim will be remembered for their courage and dedication.
“Their legacy will continue to inspire others to serve with integrity and selflessness,” he said.
