Elders Step In as Ebira Youth Congress Moves to Heal Internal Rift

In a decisive move to restore unity and stability within the Ebira Youth Congress (EYC), the Council of Elders of the Congress has stepped in to address a recent disagreement that erupted within the National Executive Council (NEC), setting in motion a reconciliation process aimed at preserving the organisation’s cohesion and relevance.

The intervention followed a stakeholders’ meeting convened on January 23, 2026, at the Federal College of Education, Okene, under the statutory oversight mandate of the Elders Council.

The meeting brought together past and present leaders of the Congress, senior members, and key stakeholders to broker an amicable resolution to the lingering dispute.

Chairing the meeting, the Chairman of the Council of Elders, Comrade (Dr.) Haroun Opotu, reminded participants of the historic role the EYC has played in advancing the collective interests of Ebira land.

He urged the current leadership to rise above personal differences and steer the Congress back on the path of unity, responsibility and service to the people.

The meeting attracted an impressive array of attendees, including former Presidents-General, past Secretaries-General, serving NEC members, and respected professionals within the Congress.

At the heart of the meeting were presentations by the President-General, Comrade Ahmed S. Bachido, and the Secretary-General, Comrade Abdulsalam Illyas, who spoke on behalf of the two disagreeing factions within the NEC.

Other stakeholders also made interventions, largely echoing calls for restraint, dialogue and peaceful resolution in the overall interest of the Congress.

After extensive deliberations, the meeting observed that disagreement is not uncommon in human organisations and that the current crisis within the EYC, while unfortunate, is neither unusual nor insurmountable.

The Stakeholders at the occasion expressed confidence that with sincerity and cooperation, the Congress could emerge from the dispute stronger and more united.

To this end, the Council of Elders resolved to constitute a five-man committee tasked with investigating the root causes of the disagreement, identifying the roles played by individuals or groups, and recommending appropriate steps for lasting resolution.

The committee is chaired by Comrade Abubakar Momoh (Teddy), with Comrades Gomina Kadir, Shiek A. Mamman and Y.Y. Hasan as members, while Comrade Dr. A.M. Rabiu will serve as Secretary and given a two-week deadline to submit its report.

In the interim, all parties involved in the dispute have been directed to observe a ceasefire by refraining from making comments or statements on the matter in any public space until the committee concludes its assignment.

The meeting ended on a conciliatory note, with an appeal to all stakeholders to cooperate fully with the committee and commit themselves to an amicable settlement.

While commending those who have made genuine efforts to douse tensions, the Council of Elders also urged individuals who may have contributed to the discord to seize the opportunity for self-reflection and redemption in the interest of the Congress and Ebira land at large.
