The remaining pupils and staff abducted from St. Mary’s Catholic Private Primary and Secondary School, Papiri, in Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State, have regained their freedom and are currently en route to Minna.
Our Correspondent recalls that more than 300 students and staff of the school were abducted last week when heavily armed attackers stormed the premises, reportedly operating for several hours without resistance.
Details of the exact number released in the final batch remained unclear as of Sunday night, amid unconfirmed reports that some students were exhausted,following a long trek during captivity.
The release was confirmed by the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Bishop of the Kontagora Diocese, Most Rev. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, who is also the proprietor of the school.
In a statement signed by his Media Aide, Dan Atori, the Bishop disclosed that Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, personally called to convey the news of the release.
“The Governor called the CAN Chairman a few minutes ago to confirm the release of the children and the teachers,” the statement said.
Atori said that while the number of those freed was not immediately disclosed, the pupils and staff are expected to arrive in Minna on Monday, where they will be formally received by Governor Bago at the Government House.
