The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) has reassured Nigerians of the safety of genetically modified (GM) crops through a robust Post-Release Monitoring (PRM) framework.
Dr. Agnes Asagbra, in a statement issued in lokoja on Thursday by Mrs. Gloria Ogbaki, Head of Information and Communications at NBMA, emphasized the agency’s commitment to ensuring GM crops remain safe following their commercial release.
Asagbra highlighted this commitment during a stakeholder meeting held on Wednesday, where the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for PRM of GM crops, particularly TELA Maize, were discussed.
She underscored the NBMA’s regulatory role in monitoring GM crops after their commercialization, noting that “with every innovation comes responsible regulation.”
She reiterated the importance of ensuring that these crops, which are now widely planted by farmers across Nigeria, deliver the expected benefits while safeguarding human health, biodiversity, and the environment.
“Post-release monitoring is not only a regulatory duty but a scientific and ethical necessity,” Asagbra added.
At the event, Mrs. Hauwa Tahir, Acting Director of Biosafety Enforcement and Operations, outlined the meeting’s objectives.
She stated that the agency aims to gather insights from farmers, assess the performance of GM crops, and identify challenges that may arise post-commercialisation.
This, she emphasized, is crucial to ensuring the long-term safety and success of GM technology in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
Tahir also noted that the meeting provided a valuable opportunity for stakeholders, experts, and industry representatives to review the draft SOPs and suggest improvements to enhance the PRM framework.
She reaffirmed NBMA’s open-door policy, encouraging continued collaboration and input from all stakeholders to ensure a strong and effective monitoring system.
