The Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru, on Friday officially launched the groundbreaking ceremony for the Armed Forces Invictus Centre in Abuja.
During his address, Badaru explained that the centre is an initiative designed to bolster the nation’s security and freedom, while also serving as a beacon of hope, healing, and restoration for wounded officers, soldiers, and veterans of the armed forces.
He emphasized that the state-of-the-art facility would provide comprehensive rehabilitation and psychological support, marking a pivotal step in both the recovery of servicemen and the advancement of sports recreation in Nigeria.
“Our soldiers are the pillars of our nation’s security and freedom, and they face unimaginable challenges both on foreign battlefields and here at home. Some return with visible and invisible scars, making sacrifices that are immeasurable.
“This centre represents more than just bricks and mortar; it symbolizes the aspirations, resilience, and unwavering belief in the potential of our nation,”Badaru stated.
The Defence Minister also revealed that the Invictus Centre would function not only as a training hub, but also as a space for health and wellness programs, social development through sports, and various other activities aimed at fostering a sense of community and empowerment among service members.
Badaru commended President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” noting that the centre aligns with the vision to empower individuals and ensure a sense of belonging at all levels within the armed forces.
Earlier, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, described the Invictus Centre as a world-class rehabilitation facility dedicated to the physical and mental well-being of soldiers.
Gen.Musa emphasized that the centre would offer innovative rehabilitation programs and psychological support for military personnel, particularly focusing on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other mental health challenges faced by veterans.
“The military profession is one of the most demanding and perilous careers.
“It requires not only physical strength but mental resilience, emotional fortitude, and an unwavering commitment to duty. It is essential for society to recognize the sacrifices of our servicemen and ensure that their well-being is prioritized both during and after their service,”Musa remarked.
Musa further said that the centre would collaborate with medical institutions, non-governmental organizations, and veteran affairs bodies to create an environment of understanding and support for the wounded soldiers.
The Invictus Centre’s motto, “I Am The Master of My Fate, I Am The Captain of My Soul,” was described by Musa as an embodiment of resilience and empowerment, aimed at inspiring Nigeria’s heroes.
David Wiseman, a representative of the Invictus Foundation, also shared a goodwill message, reflecting on the strong relationship between Nigeria and the organization.
Wiseman revealed that Nigeria’s inclusion in the Invictus international community, as the first African nation, was a significant achievement and would further contribute to the improvement of rehabilitation and recovery for Nigerian soldiers.
“The friendship with Nigeria began in 2021, when I was invited to a fundraising event at the IBB Golf Course.
“It’s a privilege to see Nigeria join the Invictus international community, and we are honored to continue walking this journey with you toward better rehabilitation for those who serve this great nation,”Wiseman said.
