The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) has cautioned travelers against reckless driving and night journeys during the festive season, emphasizing the heightened risk of accidents.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Dr. Yusuf Suberu, FCT Squadron Leader of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), urged motorists to prioritize safety, noting that increased traffic congestion during Christmas poses greater accident risks.
“As we approach the Christmas celebrations, we advise motorists to exercise caution, avoid reckless driving, plan their journeys carefully, and refrain from traveling at night,” Suberu stated.
He stressed the importance of regular vehicle maintenance to prevent mechanical failures, advising drivers to check their tires, brakes, and lights before embarking on any trip. “It is better to be safe than sorry,” he added.
Suberu also warned against overloading and speeding, identifying these as leading causes of road traffic crashes on Nigerian highways. He urged motorists to drive defensively and prioritize the safety of passengers and other road users.
“Remember, the lives of your passengers and fellow road users are in your hands,” Suberu emphasized.
The VIO mayor assured that his team, along with other stakeholders, would work tirelessly to ensure smooth traffic flow during the holiday season. He appealed for cooperation from drivers, urging them to adhere to safety guidelines and support traffic officials to achieve an accident-free celebration.
“We call on all motorists to be patient, courteous, and cooperative with traffic officials. Let’s work together to ensure a safe and joyful Christmas. Safety is everyone’s responsibility,” Suberu said.
