VIO Mayor Calls for Unified Effort to Combat Reckless Driving in Abuja.

The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) has called on Abuja residents to join forces with2 the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) Mayors in combating reckless driving and overloading within the city and its surrounding areas.

In a statement issued Tuesday in Abuja, Dr. Yusuf Suberu, National Coordinator and FCT squadron leader of the Mayors of the Federation, emphasized the serious safety risks posed by reckless driving and vehicle overloading on FCT roads, including accidents, traffic congestion, and other hazards.

Suberu stressed the need for a collective approach to curb these issues, which have led to numerous fatalities and significant road destruction in the FCT.

He called on residents, especially passengers, to take action by cautioning reckless drivers and reporting incidents of overloading and other traffic violations to the relevant authorities.

“We must work together to change drivers’ attitudes and promote discipline on our roads,” he said.

Suberu said that efforts of the VIO Mayor,a volunteer arm of the DRTS,has been tirelessly working to reduce road crashes and promote safety in the FCT.

“The VIO Mayors have also launched the social media campaign #SafetyDriveFCT to raise awareness and engage the public in supporting safe driving practices.

“Under the Operation Safety Drive initiative, the VIO Mayors are focused on educating drivers about road safety, while partnering with authorities to enforce traffic laws.

“We need the support of every resident, driver, and passenger to make our roads safer.

“Together, we can work to curb reckless driving and overloading, promote respect for traffic rules, and improve road safety in the FCT,” he added.”

Suberu expressed appreciation to the FCT Administration, Nigeria Police, and other stakeholders for their support, while urging continued efforts to restore order and safety on Abuja’s roads.
