Workers in the nation’s telecommunications sector, represented by the Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association (PTECSSAN), have taken decision to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike on Monday.
Our correspondent gathered that the industrial action is driven by grievances over layoffs and poor working conditions.
According to the affected workers, the strike will involve critical staff, including field maintenance engineers, transmission engineers, customer service engineers, and fibre engineers, raising concerns about potential disruptions to telecommunications services across the country.
PTECSSAN says it has ongoing disputes with 39 telecom support companies, including Specific Tools & Technology Limited, which recently dismissed three of its members. The union had previously issued a seven-day notice to these companies, demanding resolution of their issues or facing the strike.
PTECSSAN’s Key demands include: Recognition of the union’s role in negotiating employee welfare,Proper remittance of membership dues, Acknowledgment of years of service and implementation of pensions, health benefits, and group life insurance as required by law and Compliance with international standards for leave, work hours, and occupational safety.
PTECSSAN General Secretary Abdullahi Okonu said, “Despite our efforts to engage with employers, our demands have been ignored. This strike is a last resort to protect our members’ rights. We ask the public for their understanding and support as we seek fair treatment.”
The union has expressed pledged to continue negotiations with employers and the government but insists it would maintain the strike until its demands were met.
