The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun Command, has encouraged motorists to adopt compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternative energy source to help manage and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
FRSC Sector Commander Mr. Anthony Uga made this recommendation during a zonal sensitization event held on Friday at Bezer Hotel in Ota, Ogun.
Uga emphasized that switching to CNG could significantly aid in mitigating global ozone layer depletion and combat the adverse effects of fossil fuel emissions on global warming.
“The goal of this sensitization exercise is to raise awareness among motorists and stakeholders about the benefits of CNG,” Uga said.
He highlighted that emissions from fossil fuels, especially from trucks and articulated vehicles, contribute 21 percent of global carbon emissions.
While praising CNG for being both economical and environmentally friendly, Uga also advocated for non-motorized transportation options, such as cycling, which can improve public health.
Commissioner for Transportation Mr. Gbenga Dairo, represented by Mr. Hassan Bamidele, commended the FRSC for its initiative and noted that Governor Dapo Abiodun had procured CNG buses for the state. Dairo also revealed plans for a public-private partnership to develop e-mobile programs and e-stations to further address carbon emission challenges.
Two facilitators from Green Fuel Limited, Messrs. Harikrishnan Perumal and Bolaji Oyedeko, demonstrated how CNG is safer in the event of an explosion and expressed their willingness to collaborate with organizations interested in setting up CNG stations.
Vehicles Inspection Zonal Commander for Ota, Mr. Oluwatoyin Olugbenga, urged stakeholders to apply the information provided and support the initiative to reduce fossil fuel emissions.
Prof. Abiodun Adebayo, Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University, Ota, backed the push for alternative energy solutions to combat global warming and called for greater public engagement. Adebayo, represented by Dominic Azo, also urged the government and stakeholders to work towards making CNG more affordable.
