Kwara State University Malete says it has expelled 87 students for examination malpractices, drug-related offences and internet fraud.
The Vice Chancellor of the University,Professor Muhammed Mustapha Akanbi (SAN),stated this while speaking at the 8th and 9th Convocation press briefing at the University campus in Malete on Monday.
According to the Vice Chancellor, their expulsion followed investigation and the establishment of their guilt by the Students’ Disciplinary Committee.
“Kwara state University has zero tolerance for indiscipline and misconduct. All cases of indiscipline are investigated and the appropriate punitive measures taken against students found guilty of such offence. This is to ensure that the few bad eggs among the students do not contaminate the decent ones.
“Between 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 academic sessions, 87 students were expelled from the University. The students were involved in examination malpractice, drug related offences, internet fraud, robbery among other antisocial behaviour” The VC said.
Professor Akanbi noted that 6,620 students woukd graduate from the University for the year 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 academic sessions, adding that 98 of them would graduate with first class degree.
He said the Institution was among the Nigeriab universities that did not cancel any academic session due to COVID-19 pandemic, pointing out that the University’s academic programmes currently enjoyed full accreditation status.
He explained that the University had trained and certified 21,000 students in Enterprise creation , adding that 18,000 students had their businesses registered with the corporate Affairs Commission.
The Vice Chancellor urged the federal government to formulate a policy that would make it mandatory for students in tertiary institutions to live on campus, to reduce their exposure to anti-social vices and creat the enabling environment to keep brain drain
He said the the University would also confer Honorary Degrees on seven distinguished Nigerians, including the First Lady of Nigeria, Mrs Aisha Buhari, Professor Ibrahim Abiola Gambari, among others on December 11,2021.
