After 17 months of leadership tussle, culminating into suspension and counter-suspension of some members, the former Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Niger state, Barrister Tanko Beji, one of the factional chairmen of the party in the state has emerged chairman of the party.
The Chairman of the state PDP Congress Committee and Benue State Deputy Governor, Engineer Benson Abounu, declared Tanko Beji as winner of the state PDP championship contest which took place at the party secretariat, eastern by-pass, Minna the state capital.
Announcing the election results at about 1: 00 a.m Sunday morning, Abounu said a total of 2,305 delegates/voters were accredited, adding that Tanko Beji polled 2, 092 votes against his opponent, Engineer Ahmed Muktar who got 2 votes while 8 votes were voided.
Abounu said, “Tanko Beji won the state PDP championship seat and returned elected for second term. The remaining people did not cast their votes for any candidate as such, undecided as their ballot papers were never found in any of the boxes.”
Engineer Benson, who had earlier reminded members on the need to uphold party interest above personal interest if PDP must return to power at the state and Presidential level, expressed gratitude to God for a successful exercise.
Abounu commended stakeholders and the entire PDP delegates for maximum cooperation, patient, zeal and the determination without which the exercise wouldn’t have been successful,notwithstanding the heavy downpour.
In his acceptance speech, Beji expressed appreciation to the elders and members of the PDP in the state for waiting patiently all through the 17 months of intra-party squabbles and his eventual emergence for a second term as chairman.
Beji, who promised to operate an open door policy “whereby every member is a leader in his/her on merit and ready to welcome constructive criticisms”, however, observed that loyalty would be rewarded while betrayers would be sanctioned.
Meanwhile, the former state Governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, leading another faction boycotted the state PDP congress which took place at the state party secretariat along eastern by-pass, Minna the state capital.
Among party chieftains present at the state congress were; former Minister of Information and National Orientation and Board of Trustee member of the PDP, Professor Jerry Gana, Senator Zaynab Kure and former Minister, Alhaji Tanko Achituwo.
Others include; the PDP National Financial Secretary, Abdullahi Maibasira, former Niger state Deputy Governor, Dr. Shem Zagbayi Nuhu, former Speaker,Niger State House of Assembly, Musa Ma’ali and the former Secretary to State Government (SSG), Alhaji Ndako Kpaki.
