As Christians celebrate Easter, Pastor Alex Ogundipe of the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church, Daki-Biyu District, Kubwa, Abuja, has described the cross of Jesus Christ as a powerful symbol of transformation, where death was exchanged for life and humanity restored to God.
Ogundipe spoke on Sunday while delivering a sermon titled “The Redemptive Power of Mercy,” marking the Easter celebration, which commemorates the death and resurrection of Christ.
According to the cleric, the cross, once a symbol of shame, suffering, and condemnation, was redefined through the crucifixion at Calvary into a symbol of hope, redemption, and divine reconciliation.
“In earlier times, the cross represented death, sorrow, and disgrace — a clear sign that someone had been condemned.. But Jesus Christ changed its meaning forever. It became a place of great exchange, where death gave way to life,”he said.
He explained that Christ’s death was a sacrifice to atone for the sins of mankind, offering humanity a second chance after the fall of man, while His resurrection completed the process of redemption and restored the broken relationship between God and humanity.
“The enmity between man and God ended at the cross. He died so that we can be saved,” Ogundipe stated.
The pastor added that the resurrection of Christ stands as proof of His holiness, righteousness, and sinlessness, affirming that His sacrifice was accepted and that the requirements for salvation have been fully accomplished.
“His resurrection means that everything needed for salvation and redemption is complete,” he said.
Ogundipe urged Christians to reflect the true essence of Easter by turning away from greed, lust, anger, and bitterness, and embracing a life of righteousness.
He further stressed that to partake in Christ’s glory, believers must uphold the gospel, live in obedience and submission, remain steadfast as witnesses of the faith, embrace the demands of discipleship, and stay watchful in prayer while awaiting His second coming.
He noted that Easter is not only a celebration but a call to spiritual renewal and a reminder of the sacrifice made for the salvation of mankind.
