The Kogi State Government has reaffirmed its determination to transform the livestock sector into a thriving engine of economic growth, unveiling a renewed push for modern and sustainable poultry practices through the Sasso Chicken Rearing Training Programme in Lokoja.
Speaking at the sensitisation and capacity-building workshop on Thursday, the Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Olufemi Bolarinwa, described the initiative as a timely intervention designed to reposition the state’s livestock industry.
He noted that the programme aligns with the government’s broader vision of making agriculture more productive, profitable, and resilient.
Bolarinwa commended the collaborative efforts of Agro Preciso Nigeria Limited, the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, and Adva Nigeria Limited, stressing that strong public-private partnerships remain critical to driving agricultural transformation.
He emphasized that improved poultry breeds such as Sasso chickens hold immense potential for boosting food security, increasing farmers’ incomes, and improving rural livelihoods across the state.
According to him, Sasso chickens stand out for their dual-purpose advantage, offering both meat and egg production, while also demonstrating resilience and adaptability to local environmental conditions.
He added that the training programme is equipping farmers, extension agents, and other stakeholders with practical skills in brooding, feeding, disease management, and modern husbandry practices necessary for successful poultry farming.
The Commissioner assured participants of the government’s continued support through favourable policies, technical guidance, and an enabling environment to ensure the sustainability of such initiatives.
He urged beneficiaries to actively engage in the training and apply the knowledge gained to enhance productivity and efficiency in their operations.
Earlier, the Managing Director of Agro Preciso Nigeria Limited, Dr. Nurudeen Lawal, described the launch of the Sasso Poultry Sensitisation and Capacity-Building Workshop as a landmark step in strengthening Nigeria’s poultry sector through improved genetics and farmer education.
He disclosed that the initiative followed a Memorandum of Understanding with Hendrix Genetics, positioning Agro Preciso as the official agent of Sasso poultry in Nigeria.
Lawal explained that Lokoja was strategically chosen as the starting point for the nationwide rollout, reflecting growing confidence in Kogi State’s agricultural potential.
Lawal highlighted that the training, facilitated by international poultry expert Wilfred Kooij, focuses on practical knowledge, including farm business management and the role of extension systems in supporting smallholder farmers.
Participants at the workshop, including Mr. Ibrahim Arumeh, Mrs. Bilikisu Yinusa, and Mrs. Blessing Ikani, lauded the initiative, describing it as a significant boost to poultry farmers and the livestock value chain.
They expressed optimism that the programme would not only enhance their skills but also contribute meaningfully to job creation, food security, and rural economic development.
With the Sasso initiative gaining traction, stakeholders believe Kogi State may be charting a bold path towards a more modern, resilient, and commercially viable livestock sector,one capable of feeding its people while creating sustainable wealth for its farmers.
