The Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission says it has intensified engagement with the Kogi Electricity Distribution Limited as part of efforts to address the persistent power supply challenges affecting residents and businesses across the state.
The commission disclosed this in a statement issued in Lokoja by its Head of Corporate Communications, Alhaji Ali Atabo and made available to The Reporters on Tuesday.
According to Atabo,the regulatory body has been maintaining continuous dialogue with the electricity distribution company in a bid to understand the factors responsible for the irregular supply of electricity within the KEDL franchise areas.
The commission explained that during a recent interaction with the distribution company, KEDL attributed the epileptic power supply to challenges at the generation level.
The commission noted that the generating companies were currently facing constraints due to insufficient gas supply needed to power their operations, a development that has significantly reduced electricity generation nationwide.
The situation, the commission said, has inevitably affected the ability of distribution companies, including KEDL, to deliver adequate electricity to consumers across their coverage areas.
Despite the challenges, the regulatory commission assured residents of its commitment to protecting the interests of electricity consumers in the state.
It stressed that it was closely monitoring the situation to ensure that whatever volume of electricity allocated to the KEDL franchise areas is distributed fairly and efficiently to customers.
The commission further reiterated its determination to continue engaging relevant stakeholders in the power sector to improve electricity supply and enhance service delivery to households, businesses and institutions across Kogi State.
“As a regulator, we have been interfacing with the sole service provider in the state, Kogi Electricity Distribution Limited,” Atabo said.
Our correspondent reports that most parts of Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, and its surrounding communities have been experiencing erratic power supply for nearly two weeks.
The situation has disrupted social activities and slowed economic operations in the area, with residents and business owners expressing deep concern over the adverse effects on their daily lives and livelihoods. Many of them have therefore called on the appropriate authorities to urgently address the problem and restore stable electricity supply.
