In a move to boost electricity supply, reduce post-harvest losses, and strengthen small-scale enterprises across Kogi State, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has launched the first phase of distribution and installation of 30 units of 500kVA transformers across the three senatorial districts of the state.
Speaking during the official flag-off ceremony held at the Government House in Lokoja, Governor Ododo said the initiative reflects his administration’s determination to ensure equitable power supply to all parts of the state.
“Electricity is the backbone of every developed economy. Our goal is to ensure steady power supply across Kogi State to drive economic growth, enhance security, power educational institutions, and improve healthcare delivery,” the Governor said.
Ododo emphasized that the distribution of the transformers was carried out based on fairness and equity, ensuring that each senatorial district received an equal share in this first phase.
He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his bold and strategic economic reforms, which, according to him, have made it possible for states like Kogi to access the resources needed to implement impactful projects.
The Governor also thanked the people of Kogi State for their continued support and prayers, urging them to take ownership of the transformers and protect them from vandalism.
Commissioner for Rural and Energy Development, Engr. Muhammad Abdulmutallib Ohiazu, disclosed that the Ministry received a total of 68 requests for transformers—16 from Kogi East, 22 from Kogi West, and 30 from Kogi Central. However, in line with the Governor’s directive, each senatorial district was allocated 10 units of 500kVA transformers in the first phase.
“Going by the figures, Kogi West achieved 50% coverage of its requests, Kogi East 63%, while Kogi Central has 33%. This is only the first phase; the remaining areas will be captured in subsequent phases,” he said.
Ohiazu added that the Ministry worked in close collaboration with the Kogi Electricity Distribution Company and the Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission to assess and prioritize the power needs of various communities.
He assured residents that the installation of the transformers would be completed promptly, with damaged units replaced and energized the same day to ensure immediate restoration of power.
