The Emir of Minna, Alhaji Umar Farouq Bahago, has praised the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for its swift intervention in tackling the spread of cholera in Niger State, where 150 new cases have been detected.
The Emir gave the commendation in Minna on Monday when he received the UNICEF Chief of Kaduna Field Office, Dr. Gerida Birukila, represented by UNICEF Health Specialist, Dr. Ahmed Tsofo, during an advocacy visit to the Emirate Council.
The traditional ruler pledged the Emirate’s unwavering support to UNICEF’s efforts, praying for the success of the agency’s mission to stem the spread of the disease, which has so far claimed 16 lives,mostly children,out of 451 recorded cases.
“We will continue to sensitize our people and work for their welfare. We will support your efforts and complement your activities in all the four areas of intervention,” the Emir assured.
Dr. Tsofo informed the Emir that more than 451 cases of cholera had been reported in the state, with over 150 confirmed through rapid diagnostic testing.
He said the number of deaths had risen from 13 last week to 16, and stressed the need for continued collaboration between UNICEF and the state government to prevent further fatalities.
He added that UNICEF’s interventions in the state also cover other childhood diseases, including polio, measles, and low exclusive breastfeeding rates.
