The Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA) has confirmed the death of two persons and injuries to two others, following a thunder strike in Obi Local Government Area (LGA) on Monday, June 9.
The Director-General of NASEMA, Barr. Benjamin Akwash, disclosed this during a condolence visit to the families of the victims in Obi on Wednesday.
Akwash described the incident as tragic and said the state government received the news with deep shock.
He conveyed Governor Abdullahi Sule’s condolences to the bereaved families and well-wishes to the injured victims.
“The governor asked us to visit and console you over the unfortunate incident and to also check on those receiving treatment. We are also here to assess any damage to property with a view to providing support to cushion the effect of the disaster,”the DG said.
Our correspondent reports that the DG provided the bereaved families with an undisclosed sum of money and pledged that the state government would cover the medical expenses of the injured.
Elisha Musa-Dabioga, Deputy Chairman of Obi LGA, who led the NASEMA delegation to the victims’ homes, confirmed that four people were affected by the strike.
According to him, one victim, Aminu Ayitogo, died instantly at the scene, while another, Mika Christopher, passed away upon arrival at the Federal University of Lafia Teaching Hospital (FUTH), after being referred from the General Hospital in Obi.
“The remaining two victims have been treated and discharged,” he added.
Musa-Dabioga thanked Governor Sule and the NASEMA team for their prompt response and show of empathy.
