Over 200 youth and women from Ilorin East and South Local Government Areas of Kwara State have been empowered with entrepreneurial skills and startup capital.
The initiative, a collaboration between the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism and Dr. Yinka Aluko, the House of Representatives member for Ilorin East/Ilorin South, .
The initiative is designed to provide participants with both the knowledge and financial support to establish sustainable businesses and create jobs and tackle poverty and fostering economic independence.
During the four-day training and orientation programme Dr. Aluko underscored the importance of entrepreneurship as a tool for poverty alleviation.
“The richest people in the world are not government workers but businesspeople,” he noted.
Speaking through his legislative aide, Abdullahi Galadima, Dr. Aluko encouraged participants to leverage their newfound skills to launch small businesses that could grow over time, contributing to local economic development.
Dr. Philip Maga, Director of the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism, represented by Mrs. Victoria Omoleaupen, the Institute’s Entrepreneurship Unit Head, reiterated the programme’s broader goal such as combiting poverty and promote economic empowerment across Nigeria.
“Government cannot do it alone,” he remarked, urging the trainees to approach their new opportunities with dedication and commitment.
The Guest speaker, Adeniyi Stephen, a successful entrepreneur, emphasized the profitability of poultry farming, urging participants to consider it as a viable and rewarding business venture.
“Poultry business is lucrative and can be ventured into by anyone with the passion and determination,” he stated.
The programme’s coordinator, Mr. Clement Alegimenlen, noted the vital role of vocational training in reducing youth unemployment and empowering the next generation of job creators.
By equipping participants with both technical skills and the capital to start businesses, this initiative has set a new standard for philanthropy and wealth-building in Nigeria, according to him.
