The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Kwara State Command has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of farmers and enhancing food security in the state.
This follows the successful resolution of 196 farmer-herder conflicts in the past year by its Agro Rangers Unit.
Dr. Umar J.G. Muhammed, the NSCDC Commandant in Kwara, shared the unit’s achievements during a press briefing at the Command’s headquarters in Ilorin.
He credited the successful resolutions to the intensive training of Agro Rangers personnel in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) techniques, enabling them to effectively mediate between farmers and herders across all 16 local government areas in Kwara State.
“The Agro Rangers have been thoroughly trained and certified in ADR mechanisms, equipping them to manage and de-escalate conflicts between farmers and herders, thereby fostering peace and cooperation in agrarian communities,” Umar said.
In addition to conflict resolution, Umar said NSCDC proactive approach in securing farmlands across the state.
This includes the strategic deployment of personnel to high-risk areas, such as Shonga Farm in Edu Local Government Area, along with routine patrols and surveillance to protect both small holder farmers and large-scale agro-businesses.
The NSCDC Commandant reaffirmed the Corps’ dedication to securing agricultural investments in Kwara, ensuring the sustainable growth of the state’s agricultural sector and the continued protection of farmers’ livelihoods.
