As the recent train attack in Kaduna remains fresh in the minds of peace-loving Nigerians, Mr Jonathan Taidi, a former secretary General of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA),has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to overhaul the security system of the country for efficiency to end banditry and kidnapping in the country.

Taidi told the Journalists in Minna on Friday, that time had come for Buhari to act to end the senseless killing of Nigerians.

He said doing that governnent must factor in the fact that the security personnel needed must be properly equipped and given adequate training to operate effectively.

The ex scribe explained that the recent twin-attack on the popular Abuja – Kaduna rail line, which killed scores of passengers and left many more wounded, was a proof that banditry and kidnapping posed major threat to the nation’s cooperate existence.

Taidi observed that in every election, there is always massive deployment of security personnel outside their places of primary assignment to ensure peaceful implementation of electoral process.

“Why are we not seeing the same kind of commitment now when there is a clear and present danger to the lives of our people traveling this route.

According to him, winning elections should not take precedence over the sacred duty of protecting the lives and property of the people, which he noted is universally acknowledged as the first function of government.

” I call on the Federal Government to make drastic changes to the current methodology of crime fighting,” he advised.

Taidi expressed optimism that doing so would go along way to effectively check the activities of bandits perpetuating “worse atrocities”; against peace-loving and innocent Nigerians.

” The service chiefs have tried their best, but we can’t continue to do the same thing. I think it is high time government did something about it and effect some changes.

“On the other side, our security architecture, as it is now, even if you change the service chiefs without changing the operating environment, there would not be any difference.

“They need to be properly equipped with more working facilities to deal with the current security threats in the country.

” We can bring in new people but if they don’t have the necessary equipment, operating environment, adequate training and technology, it is not going to make any difference.”he noted.
