An articulated vehicle, carrying container, has crashed, crushing to death a hawker and injuring a female driver in a accident at Otedola’s Bridge outward Lagos,on Sunday according to the Acting Assistant Zonal Coordinator, National Emergencies Management Agency (NEMA) Mr Abraham Farinloye.
He said that the vehicle lost control while descending toward Otedola Bridge.
“In the process of trying to park off the road, the Container fell off the body of the vehicle and landed on top of another vehicle driven by a woman who was seriously injured.
“She has been rescued and taken to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre located at Old Toll Gate by 7UP.
” A young man who hawks snacks along gridlock traffic-go-slow was crushed to death in same incident, “Farinloye said.
He said that NEMA had introduced a special operation,tagged: “Safe Eid El Kabir”, aimed at assisting the lead Agency in road safety to help reduce road traffic crash.
The Lagos Acting Zonal Coordinator, said that the operation was also to ensure that the rate of fatality on road was reduced to minimum level.
He urged travellers to always exercise patience, adding that failure to obey traffic instructions remained the major cause of the ceaseless gridlock being experienced between OPIC Centre in Ogun State and Berger Junction in Lagos State.
He also appealed to motorists to exercise utmost caution while driving, especially “in this festive season.”
According to him,the appeal became neces in view of the avoidable loss of live and life threatening injury sustained in a multiple motor traffic crashes close to Otedola Bridge outward Lagos.
Farinloye also identified activities of those buying livestock as another factor disrupting free flow of traffic along the corridor in the area.
He assured that NEMA and Lagos State Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Lagos Sector were working toward solving the problem.
“Earlier this morning, a lone accident was recorded at Lotto Corridor in Ogun State, with a truck fully loaded with bamboos at about 0520 hours, blocking the Lagos – Ibadan end of the road.
” It took almost four hours before the trans-loading and clearance of the obstruction could be completed.
” NEMA, FRSC, Police and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) responded to the crashes,”Farinloye said.
