Prioritise Water Supply Over Flyover Projects in Niger,Bawa Urges Bago

The 2023 governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Niger State, Dr. Joshua Bawa, has called on Governor Mohammed Umar Bago to urgently address the worsening water scarcity in the state, particularly in Minna and its environs.

Bawa said the persistent shortage of potable water has crippled many businesses and inflicted severe hardship on residents, urging the governor to temporarily suspend aspects of the ongoing flyover projects to tackle the immediate crisis.

He made the call shortly after formally defecting to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he was presented with a membership card by the party’s National Chairman, Senator David Mark, represented by the National Women Leader, Mrs. Naomi Lasara Abel.

The former Chief of Staff to ex-Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu clarified that he was not opposed to infrastructural development but stressed that governance must prioritise the urgent needs of the people.

“I am not against the construction of flyovers,” Bawa said while addressing hundreds of supporters at Vagosh Hotel in Minna.

“But the suffering of the masses should be weighed alongside any ambition to leave a legacy. Water is life, and this essential commodity is being denied Nigerlites at a time they need it most,”he added.

Bawa suggested that the state government could scale down the number of flyover projects being executed simultaneously and redirect resources to fixing the water supply system, particularly drawing adequate water from the Bosso Dam to address the crisis.

“Not everyone owns a car or uses flyovers, but every household needs water,” according to him.

“Maybe those around the governor are not telling him the truth about what the people are going through. I advise him to urgently resolve the water-related problems confronting the populace,”he noted.

Bawa also emphasised the need for the governor to “get his priorities right” by focusing on immediate and essential needs before embarking on multiple large-scale infrastructure projects.

Earlier, the Niger State Chairman of the ADC, Alhaji Alhassan Musa, welcomed Bawa and other defectors into the party, describing their decision as bold and timely.
