The Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has paid glowing tribute to Nigeria’s fallen heroes, describing their sacrifices as the bedrock of the peace, unity and freedom the nation enjoys.

Speaking at the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony held in Lokoja on Thursday, Governor Ododo, who was represented by his Deputy, Comrade Joel Salifu, said the occasion serves as a solemn reminder of the bravery, patriotism and selflessness of men and women who laid down their lives in defence of the country.

“Their sacrifice must never be forgotten. They left their homes, faced grave danger and many did not return, so that we can live in peace and freedom,” the Governor said.

According to a statement by the Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Mr Unubi Emmanuel, Governor Ododo expressed deep sympathy to the families of fallen soldiers, particularly widows, children and parents, assuring them that their pain is acknowledged and their sacrifices remain honoured by the government and people of Kogi State.

The Governor also commended serving officers and men of the Armed Forces for their courage and unwavering dedication, describing them as the living shield of the nation who risk their lives daily to protect citizens and safeguard national stability.

He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his firm leadership and sustained commitment to national security, and applauded the Service Chiefs for the gains recorded in the fight against insecurity across the country, with notable improvements in Kogi State.

Special appreciation was extended to the 12 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Kogi State for flushing out criminal elements and protecting lives and property. Governor Ododo also lauded the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Lugard, alongside other security agencies, for securing the waterways and strengthening internal security in the state.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to supporting veterans, enhancing security collaboration and prioritising the welfare of security personnel, the Governor noted that peace comes at a price.

“Peace is not free; it is earned through sacrifice. The best way to honour our fallen heroes is to reject crime, promote unity and support our security agencies,” he said.

Governor Ododo urged citizens to embrace peace and security, calling on all to say no to kidnapping, banditry and terrorism in all their forms.

He offered prayers for the repose of the souls of the fallen heroes and for continued protection, courage and strength for members of Nigeria’s Armed Forces. Edited by Dada Ahmed.
