The Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, on Friday ,renewed his call for a single four-year tenure for state governors, arguing that one term is sufficient for any leader who genuinely intends to serve the people and deliver on campaign promises.
Speaking at the inauguration of 30 Commissioners, 25 Local Government chairmen and their deputies, as well as heads of boards and parastatals at the Government House, Minna, Governor Bago said a single tenure would strengthen accountability and promote good governance.
According to him, the prevailing two-term structure often creates complacency among governors who anticipate re-election regardless of performance, making it difficult to remove underperforming officials.
He maintained that a one-term tenure would compel governors to remain focused, work harder, and leave lasting legacies within four years.
Governor Bago, who has made history by reserving all 25 Local Government vice chairmanship positions exclusively for women, said his decision reflects a deep belief in the capacity of women to manage public responsibilities effectively.
He expressed optimism that with continued encouragement and opportunities, women in Niger State will not only occupy more leadership positions but also aspire to become governor in the near future.
He further declared December 12 as Women’s Day in Niger State and unveiled the second phase of the New Niger agenda, announcing that women would soon occupy 50 per cent of chairmanship positions as part of a long-term strategy to expand female political participation.
Our Correspondent reports that the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Halima Abdulmalik,represented by Justice Maimuna Abubakar of High Court 6, Minna administered the oath of office to the newly appointed officials.
