Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has called on Fulani cattle breeders to encourage their kinsmen to embrace modern ranching as a sustainable alternative to open grazing.
He noted that ranching, being a globally recognized practice, offers immense benefits for livestock management, community harmony, and economic growth.
The Governor made the appeal when he met with representatives of Fulani groups and organizations at an event convened by the Madako Foundation for Conflict Resolution and Empowerment in Minna
Bago explained that ranching would help reduce clashes between farmers and herders, improve livestock productivity, and create new economic opportunities along cattle-rearing corridors.
He stressed that the system would also minimize rural-urban migration by promoting development in rural communities.
Acknowledging the resilience and contributions of Fulani communities across the state, the Governor assured them that his administration would continue to support law-abiding herders while working to isolate and address criminal activities wherever they occur.
He also encouraged Fulani parents to prioritize the education of their children, noting that the future of their communities depends on equipping the younger generation with knowledge and skills. In line with this, he expressed readiness to recruit qualified Fulani teachers into the state’s nomadic education program.
“I believe ranching is the most effective and sustainable way forward. It is not only about peace but also about prosperity, because it creates opportunities for value chain production and better income,” Bago said.
The Governor commended the Chief Executive Officer of the Madako Foundation, Hauwa Ibrahim Madako, for her efforts in building bridges across ethnic communities and in promoting the education of Fulani children.
Earlier, Dr. Abubakar Umar Girei, who represented the Lamido of Adamawa, praised Governor Bago for his inclusive leadership and his consistent support to Fulani communities, particularly through initiatives linked to the Madako Foundation.
Hauwa Madako, in her remarks, explained that the foundation was born out of her personal encounter with a child living with a neurological condition.
She said the organization has since expanded into education and empowerment initiatives aimed at improving the lives of Fulani families across Niger State.
