The Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative (AWWDI) has called on the Nasarawa State Government to ensure that public buildings are designed to accommodate the needs of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), especially women and girls.
Mrs. Asaba Averson, the State Coordinator of AWWDI, made the appeal during a press conference on Monday in Lafia, the state capital.
Averson noted that PWDs in Nasarawa face significant barriers in accessing public spaces, services, and opportunities, which limits their ability to participate fully in society.
āThese barriers have hindered our inclusion and participation in socio-economic activities,ā she said. āWe urge the government and the private sector to urgently address these challenges to enable us to realise our full potential.ā
She emphasized the need for the provision of essential inclusive infrastructure, such as ramps, elevators, wide doorways for wheelchairs, accessible restrooms equipped with grab bars and lowered sinks, as well as tactile paving and braille signage for the visually impaired.
āWe also advocate for audio signals at pedestrian crossings and the availability of sign language interpreters at public events,ā she added.
Averson stressed the importance of disability awareness training for public sector staff to ensure respectful and effective service delivery to PWDs.
She further urged the government and relevant stakeholders to prioritise accessibility and adopt inclusive policies that uphold the rights and dignity of all citizens, regardless of ability.
The AWWDI coordinator also called for an inclusive transportation system, better access to healthcare services, and the involvement of PWDs in policy and decision-making processes to ensure their voices are heard.
āIf these recommendations are implemented, Nasarawa will move closer to becoming a truly inclusive and equitable society. We want to contribute meaningfully to the stateās development, and inclusion is key to unlocking our potential,ā Averson said.
She reaffirmed AWWDIās commitment to advocating for the rights of women and girls with disabilities, in line with the organisationās mission.
