,,,,,,Appoints Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as Administrator
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State in response to ongoing political and security turmoil.
The announcement was made in a national broadcast, highlighting the ongoing tensions between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the state legislature, which have led to a near collapse of governance.
Citing constitutional breaches, the demolition of the state House of Assembly, and the failure to restore democratic order despite Supreme Court rulings, President Tinubu revealed the suspension of Governor Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the state legislature for an initial six-month period.
The President appointed Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as the Administrator of Rivers State, ensuring that the judiciary will remain operational and continue its constitutional duties.
In his statement, President Tinubu stressed that the declaration was made to safeguard the lives and property of Rivers residents and maintain governance continuity.
He assured that the emergency measures had been officially gazetted and submitted to the National Assembly for constitutional approval.
The President called on all stakeholders to support democratic principles and work towards a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
