The Federal University Lokoja (FUL), located in Kogi State, North Central Nigeria, has officially resumed academic activities on Monday, March 17,2025,following a three-week suspension due to a tragic incident that claimed the lives of five students.
Our correspondent reports that the university was shut down after a devastating road accident on the Felele axis of the Lokoja-Okene Highway.
A wood-laden articulated vehicle lost control due to brake failure and crashed into a minibus carrying students en route to the university’s permanent campus, Felele.
Only one student survived the horrific accident.
The incident sparked widespread concern among students and the wider community, with many calling on the government to take action by regulating the movement of articulated vehicles.
The students also called for creation of alternative route to prevent accidents becoming frequent on the road.
In response to the growing tension and potential unrest, the university management decided to suspend academic activities indefinitely as a precautionary measure.
As the university reopens, many students who spoke with our correspondent on Sunday at the Adankolo campus said going back to classes marked a solemn return to normalcy, with many of them and faculty members remembering the lives lost and hoping for safer conditions moving forward.
