The Society of Women in Taxation (SWIT), Kwara Chapter, has extended its advocacy for tax knowledge and compliance to secondary schools across the state, hosting a debate to enhance students’ understanding of taxation and economic policies.
The event, held in Ilorin, is the North Central edition of the National Debate Competition, featuring six public secondary schools.
This year’s topic, “Increase in Value Added Tax Rate is Beneficial to the Economy,” sparked insightful discussions.
Mrs. Oluwakemi Obakemi, SWIT State Coordinator, addressed the importance of the initiative, which aims to raise tax awareness and financial literacy among students, particularly as discussions about increasing the Value Added Tax (VAT) rate from 7.5% to 10% gain momentum.
“As the debate on VAT increases heats up, it is crucial to involve young minds in the conversation. This event is designed to allow them to critically engage with the issue and inform the public on both the benefits and drawbacks.
“Their findings will be shared with the Tax Reform Committee before a final decision is made,” Obakemi explained.
Prof. Khadijat Yahaya, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, emphasized the significance of involving youths in discussions on taxation, economic development, and national progress.
The Kwara State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Saadat Modibbo-Kawu, represented by Mr. Taye Odedeji, lauded SWIT for supporting the government’s vision for empowering women and girls.
She reiterated the administration’s commitment to initiatives that equip students with essential financial knowledge.
Dr. Abdulhakeem Shuaib, Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), Ilorin and District Society, commended SWIT for fostering financial discipline among students from an early age.
The debate concluded with Government Girls Day Secondary School, Oke Sunnah, emerging as the winner with 64.5%, followed by Queen Elizabeth Secondary School (59.0%) and Cherubim and Seraphim College (57.7%).
Muminat Abdulganiyu (Government Girls Day Secondary School, Oke Sunnah) and Hamdalat Agboola (Queen Elizabeth Secondary School) will represent the North Central Zone at the Grand Finale on February 20.
