The Ogun Area 1 Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has dealt a major blow to smuggling operations in the state, confiscating illegal goods worth N229.1 million within just seven days.
Addressing journalists on Thursday in Idi-Iroko, the new Area Comptroller, Mr. Ahmadu Shuaibu, revealed that the goods, with a duty paid value of N229,112,424, were intercepted at multiple hotspots, including Idi-Iroko, Ilaro, Obada Oko, and Imeko-Afon.
Shuaibu attributed the success to intelligence gathering, strategic surveillance, and collaboration with concerned citizens, describing the operation as a decisive move against smugglers threatening Nigeria’s economy and security.
“Our operatives are committed to dismantling smuggling networks that undermine our economy, endanger lives, and hurt local industries,” Shuaibu stated.
Among the items seized according to him include:2,169 bags of smuggled foreign parboiled rice (50kg each),
1,128 parcels of cannabis weighing 1,109kg,21 bales and two sacks of used clothing,
166 pieces of pneumatic tyres,
4,360 cartons of imported shoes,250 kegs of premium motor spirit (PMS),20 vehicles used for smuggling and A 2012 Toyota Highlander SUV.
Shuaibu described the confiscated items as a significant threat to Nigeria’s economy and public safety, warning smugglers to abandon their activities or face the full wrath of the law.
“Our command is prepared to counter these illegal activities with superior intelligence, unwavering commitment, and, where necessary, lawful force,” he declared.
The customs boss lauded the support of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr. Bashir Adeniyi, as well as the operatives who carried out the operations.
He reassured the public of the command’s dedication to fostering legitimate trade and economic growth while maintaining close collaboration with local communities and sister security agencies.
Shuaibu, who assumed duty as Area Comptroller on Dec. 10, vowed to sustain the fight against smuggling in the region.
