The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has issued a strong warning to Nigerians about the dangers posed by counterfeit batteries and misleading product labels, especially within the battery and solar power industries.
The agency emphasized the importance of prioritizing quality assurance to safeguard consumers and support the development of a more reliable energy sector.
At a sensitization workshop held at the SON office in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Thursday, experts stressed the critical need for trustworthy products to ensure both consumer safety and the advancement of Nigeria’s energy infrastructure.
Engineer Ibukun Alasan, who facilitated the workshop, addressed the theme, “Driving the Efficiency and Effectiveness of the Battery/Solar Power Sector to 100%.”
She emphasized that substandard batteries not only shorten product lifespans but also pose significant safety risks.
“Misleading labels can lead to improper maintenance and damage to products,” Alasan cautioned, adding that using low-capacity batteries in high-demand situations could result in malfunctions or even hazardous conditions.
She advised Nigerians to always check for the SON quality seal on battery products to confirm their authenticity and safety.
Another speaker, Habibullahi Abdullahi, underscored the importance of quality solar accessories in advancing Nigeria’s renewable energy agenda.
“Manufacturers, regulators, and consumers must work together to establish stringent quality standards and regulatory frameworks,” he urged, stressing the need for collaborative efforts to uphold product integrity in the sector.
Representing SON’s Director General, Kwara State Coordinator Ayeni Feyisayo, discussed the wider implications of substandard products on both productivity and quality of life.
“If people cannot reliably power their equipment, it negatively impacts their efficiency, mental clarity, and overall well-being,” he explained, calling for a renewed focus on responsible production and consumption.
He reiterated SON’s commitment to enforcing strict standards in the battery and solar sectors and warned that vendors caught selling counterfeit products would face severe penalties.
The agency encouraged workshop participants to apply the knowledge gained to help protect Nigeria’s battery and solar markets, contributing to the nation’s goal of achieving sustainable energy solutions.
